Tax Help You Need and Deserve

"Taxes are the price we pay for living in a civilized society," wrote U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. Taxes are a simple fact of life and an unavoidable responsibility of owning a business or working at an occupation. There are many types of taxes and it is to your benefit to best understand your tax obligations and plan for ways to pay only your fair share.

People generally hire someone to prepare their tax forms for the same reason they take their car to a garage to get an oil change. It's messy, time-consuming and if done improperly could cost you a good deal of money. But finding a tax preparation expert isn't as easy as finding an oil change franchise.

Choose you preparer carefully. If you paid someone to prepare your return, the preparer is required, by law, to sign the return and fill in the other blanks in the Paid Preparer's area of your return. Remember, however, that you are still responsible for the accuracy of every item entered on your return. If there is any under payment, you are responsible for paying it, plus any interest and penalty that may be due.

There are several easy steps you can follow to save money on your tax preparation and reduce the risk of an expensive error. First--get organized. If you keep your financial records on a software program, copy the information onto a CD or print it for the preparer. Create separate folders for such categories as health costs (including health insurance premiums), charitable contributions, and income (from all sources).

Secondly, tell your tax preparer the truth about your income and expenses. By hiding the fact that your grown son is living with you, may cost you the opportunity to claim a tax-saving dependency exemption.

Finally, don't wait to the last minute to begin your search for a competent tax preparer. Waiting until April 10 to try to find a reliable tax agency may be too late.
